Successful Drug Rehab

Your progress will depend on three essential ingredients: Honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness.

Understandably, the prospect of knowing yourself and being known for who you really are is frightening, and so it inspires a great deal of fear. The key is using honesty to see ourselves in the mirror. Then, you will need to be willing to accept genuine expressions of staff and peers of how you present yourself, and open-minded of their assessment both in your strengths and weaknesses.

Your community is your ally. Your reassurance lies in the fact that all of your peers have the same basic problems and they too are seeking freedom from addiction. Therefore, they are both deeply understanding and supportive of your efforts to find your way to freedom and discover the real you.

The more structure and support you have the better chance you have of remaining clean and sober.

Practical Methods for Treating Depression and Substance Abuse Simultaneously.

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Oct.29, 2010, under Home

The National Institute For Holistic Addiction Studies (NIFHAS) reviewed outcomes of four substance abuse treatment participants who had participated in the program Drumming Off Drugs™ as part of their treatment experience. Specifically, we looked at changes in the Depression Scores using Becks Depression Inventory prior to the 10 session drumming class and then after completion of at least 8 of the 10 sessions.

Practical Methods for Treating Depression and Substance Abuse Simultaneously. There is significant evidence that co-occurrence of depression and substance abuse is prevalent among inpatient drug rehabilitation clients. Treatment paradigms for drug abuse range widely, and include pharmacologic, cognitive, and holistic approaches, and there is growing interest in programs that integrate these various methods to treat both the depression and substance abuse concurrently.

Rhythmic group drumming as a rehabilitative therapy modality has recently been bolstered by key scientific findings of interactions between music/drumming activity and the release of neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. Music therapy in general has been gaining in popularity in recent years. Drumming is effective for improving concentration, a sense of connectedness to others and self-esteem in recovery populations.

Drumming represents a music therapy that requires limited fine motor coordination, is readily learned by all populations (normal and disabled) and all ages in a very short period of time, and that does not require significant expense. Rhythmic drumming also slows brain wave activity similar to meditation. allowing a more open dialogue during treatment. This is a very useful and powerful state of mind for a recovering addict. Drumming Off Drugs is believed to be a particularly useful therapeutic tool for improving substance abuse rehabilitation outcomes and recovery resiliency.

What Does Relapse Look Like ?

When an individual becomes sober they are starting to engage in what you may think of as a new and unnatural pattern of behavior for them. What this means is that their normal behavior, which they have learned and become accustomed to , has involved a drinking /drugging life style with all of the possible behaviors which tend to go along with that lifestyle They may be desperate to change their life but at the same time they are in a way comfortable with that life and have great difficulty changing. People who get sober are usually provided with a strategy for them to utilize in order for them to be able to stay sober and to also change their perceptions, beliefs, behavior, morals, actions, and their life priorities. They are in effect reintegrating themselves back into “normalcy”.

Their strategy for staying sober may involve various actions they must take to give themselves the best chance of remaining sober. These may include participation in 12 step recovery, addiction treatment, ongoing therapy, medication, meeting and forming bonds and relationships with other sober people and many others. It is when someone begins to depart from their strategic sobriety plan that the risk of relapse occurs. And, relapse is not just a one time event of using drugs again after a period of sobriety. Relapse is gradual process involving the person’s complacency and failure to do the things that were recommended for them to do to stay sober and this process can take a lot of time i.e., the gradual deterioration of their sobriety until they do eventually pick up a drink or drug. And there may also be environmental “triggers” which set off the persons drug and alcohol centered thinking once again. These triggers must be explored, the person must learn to self identify their own triggers and they must develop an action plan when they realize that their thinking and behavior is being influenced by such triggers.
