Addiction Recovery
Sound Pillow®…A holistic approach to relax the Mind…Body…and Spirit
Many folks in early addiction recovery suffer from stress, anxiety, and fear causing long, sleepless nights. Sound Pillow helps sufferers through these periods of unease and restlessness to reach a state of relaxation and achieve the rejuvenating effects of a good night’s sleep. This personal audio device provides recovering addicts the ability to get a comfortable night’s sleep by providing a calming, soothing distraction from disturbing thoughts and silences “The Voices” in the head. Sound Pillow allows the mind to shut down, the body to relax, and the spirit to heal.
Sound Pillow Meditation can be a powerful tool in relapse prevention, becoming what one therapist called “a positive addiction providing a healthy alternative to addictive behaviors.”People in long-term recovery report that meditation provides new insights about the source of their cravings, resentments, and fears. Let Sound Pillow become a daily recovery tool regardless if you’re a newcomer or in long-term recovery.
For testimonials on the effectiveness of Sound Pillow during addiction recovery, please see below.

A Father’s Call

A Father’s Call « Holistic Lifestyles Radio

A Father’s Call

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Apr.08, 2011, under Home

As you know, over the course of the last fifteen years; I spent hundreds of hours talking to clients and customers, doctors, clinicians and counselors servicing all walks of life in a variety of fields. I have invested a great deal of emotional, physical and financial resources as well. From a purely “business perspective,” there has been little to no ROI (Return on Investment); at least not financially.

So why do I keep it alive? Why is it still available and evolved into the Sound Pillow Sleep System? Because I believe that God places people on our path at the right time. In many cases, He sends them to us when we need them most. We just have to be willing to recognize and listen to the message. How does this apply to the Sound Pillow? This is the second installment in the Three Phone Calls series: Stories of my experiences with three unique individuals of which I had three profound conversations.

A Father’s Call. In late 2009, Ron W. called. That morning Ron was sitting in a waiting room, waiting for his physician to discuss his Tinnitus. While in wait mode, Ron stumbled upon the Sound Pillow in Tinnitus Today and called us to see if we could help.

About 10 minutes into the conversation, he suddenly switched gears on me and started talking about his daughter Angela. Angela had just been picked-up off the Ohio streets. She had run away over two-years earlier and turned to prostitution to support her heroine addiction. The story of Ron’s two-year search and his emotional discovery of her condition, were moving. My daughter was six and I just did not want to try imagining myself in his shoes…Thinking of my daughter, I was compelled to do something nice for Ron and his daughter Angela. So I sent 20 Sound Pillows to the Darlene Bishop Home for Life, with zero expectations. I was just compelled to do it.

A couple of weeks later I received a letter from Beth Ward, the Director of the Darlene Bishop Home for Life. She stated “The Sound Pillows are a huge success!!” – I had no idea what she meant, the Sound Pillows were just gifts to a group of ladies that I thought needed a morale boost. So, I called Beth and was amazed to learn the girls were sleeping and they were sleeping well.

Because of a Father’s Call, I started working with clients in various stages of Addiction Recovery. We have tested the Sound Pillow Sleep System, with phenomenal success, at G&G Holistic Addiction Treatment Center, Palm Partners, Sunrise Detox and Destination Hope. The results were wonderful. The vast majority of the client’s were getting a meaningful night’s sleep. Meaningful sleep is healing sleep and it improved their moods, their outlooks for success, they were much more relaxed and in many cases, even more pleasant to be around. We will be posting the results to the Sound Pillow web site soon…Stay tuned.

You can read Beth Ward’s letter now at www.SoundPIllow.com. Just click on the Addiction Recovery Tab and scroll down a little. If you or someone you know could use a good night of healing sleep, give us a call at 877-846-6488.

Hot Off the Press! Results of In-Clinic Testing of Sound Pillow® Sleep System Are In

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Mar.14, 2011, under Home

Two Rockers and the Sound Pillow: Very Cool

For the past six weeks we have been testing the new Sound Pillow Sleep System in several Addiction Recovery Centers. These in-clinic tests were made possible through the cooperation of: the National Institute for Holistic Addiction Studies (N.I.F.H.A.S.), G&G Holistic Addiction Treatment Center, Palm Partners, Destination Hope and Sunrise Detox. And to say the results were eye opening would be an understatement. Here’s what happened…

Each of the centers received 5 – 8 Sound Pillow Sleep Systems consisting of: an MP4 Player Pre-Loaded with 14 ½ hours of binaural music, natures sounds and affirmations from Dr. Harry Henshaw, Ed.D., and a Sound Pillow. The centers then selected clients to test the sleep systems. Each client slept with the sleep system, for two weeks. After two weeks, the clients completed a questionnaire rating the Sound Pillow’s comfort and sound quality, how much they liked the music, how relaxing the system was and most importantly…the overall quality of their sleep. Their counselors also complete a questionnaire about their client’s mood, attitude and overall outlook of success. Neither the client nor their counselor saw the answers provided by the other (double blind study).

The results and feedback are amazing…91% of the clients believe the Sound Pillow Sleep System will help them through their recovery journey. And 97% would recommend the system to others in addiction recovery. Why? Because the system allowed the clients to not only fall asleep, but to STAY asleep! And because they stayed asleep, they completed sleep’s critical-healing cycles: Deep Sleep/Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) and REM (Rapid Eye Movement). So they were in better moods which improved their attitudes which led to a better outlook for success, not to mention they were nicer people to be around.

These results were reiterated by the fact that…100% of the counselors (21 total individuals) reported they would recommend the Sound Pillow Sleep System to other addiction recovery centers. Why? Because their clients slept which put them in better moods which allows for more productive communications which leads to more meaningful interactions which will lead to better results in the short and long haul.

Want to see the evidence for yourself? Send me an email: Scott@SoundPillow.com. I will send as many of them to you as you like. And if you are ready for a meaningful night’s sleep, visit the web site at www.SoundPIlllow.com. And do it soon as the Sound Pillow Sleep System is being introduced for only $78.88 through May 31st. That’s $20.00 off through May.

SuperGroup rocks Showcase Live to fight addiction

Rick Derringer

BY STEPHEN PETERSON SUN CHRONICLE STAFF

FOXBORO – It was a night to enjoy some good ole rock ‘n’ roll from numerous well-known musicians, raise money to fight addiction and celebrate recoveries.

The 3rd Annual SuperGroup 2010 Rock & Roll Concert packed them in Saturday night at Showcase Live at Patriot Place to benefit Right Turn Addiction Services, an Arlington-based program offering assistance to artists in recovery from drug addiction and other mental health issues.

Over four hours, artists such as gifted guitarist Rick Derringer, guitarist Elliot Easton of The Cars that hailed from Boston, drummer Chad Smith of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rhode Island bluesman James Montgomery entertained.

A highlight was special guest Ernie and the Automatics, which features the band Boston’s former guitarist, Barry Goudreau, and its ex-drummer, Sib Hashian.

The six-member blues rock group out of Boston, half of whose members went to Berklee College of Music, includes Michael “Tunes” Antunes, the saxophone player for Rhode Island’s John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, and that group’s “Darkside” was played. A treat, a medley of Boston’s hits, including “More Than a Feeling” and “Long Time,” closed the hour-long set to a standing ovation.

Keyboardist/lead vocalist Brian Maes, who has played with Peter Wolf of Boston’s The J. Geils Band, was quite impressive, as were their new songs, including “Apple Hill” and “There Ain’t No Friends in Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The band’s debut album came out last year.

Guitarist/music director Ricky Byrd led the music throughout the show, having played with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Roger Daltrey of The Who. Byrd and Richie Supa, who has been a songwriter for Pink, Aerosmith, and Bon Jovi, appeared together for a couple of acoustic songs they had written about recovery, having been sober for over two decades.

“We lost Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Bonham, Keith Moon, we lost a lot to addiction,” drummer Woody Giessmann of Boston-based 80’s group The Del Fuegos told the crowd. In 2003, Giessmann founded Right Turn, and told of losing his brother to addiction and himself being a recovered addict.

The 19-member supergroup showcased Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes,” the gem “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?,” Leon Russell’s “Delta Lady,” David Bowie’s “Suffragette City,” Geils’ “Looking For a Love,” and The Rolling Stones’ “All Down the Line” and “Tumbling Dice.” Montgomery sizzled on harmonica and Tim Pike of The Soul Band burned on vocals. Keyboardist Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and Bon Jovi stood out a few times.

Rounding out the supergroup were bassist Kasim Sulton of Meat Loaf and Todd Rundgren/Utopia, exceptional guitarist Johnny A, as well as Scott Aruda, John Aruda, and Paul Ahlstrand on horns. Rosemary St. George, Erin Vulgamore and Hayley Jane were backup singers, the latter who gave an intense rendition of 1960’s pioneer female rock band The Shangri-Las’ “Remember (Walkin’ in the Sand)” that Aerosmith covered.

Derringer played his usual tribute to veterans, “Hang on Sloopy” – his No. 1 hit with the 60’s group The McCoys, and ended the night with an extended version of his 1973 killer, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Hoochie Koo.”

Unable to appear due to a last-minute hospitalization was noted guitarist Leslie West of Mountain. Also, Lynn Hoffman of A&E’s “Private Sessions” was supposed to host but a radio station disc jockey filled in.

There was also a live auction, and a painting of Elvis by Ron Wood was among the donated items.

THE ANTIDOTE FOR ADDICTION (1)

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Jun.01, 2010, under Home

Is there an antidote for addiction?

Yes! That’s the good news.

Here’s the bad news!

What if – you had to drive ten miles EVERY DAY to get the antidote?

Would you be willing to drive the ten miles?

Before saying “Yes, I want the antidote,” let’s explore this a little further.

You have to ask yourself, “How bad do I want it?”

This isn’t a trick question.

Addiction has its rewards.

Are you ready and willing to walk away from the “safety” of your solitary prison where you don’t have to – feel any pain – from the outside world; where you don’t have to grow, or change?

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. In starting our recovery journey, all we have to do is – take one step away from our solitary prisonsby “connecting” with people who have been where we are, people who will walk the journey of the thousand miles with us – every step of the way. Here’s the wisdom passed on to us the 100 original members of A.A.:

The tremendous fact – for every one of us - is that we have discovered a common solution.

We have found – a way out - from the slavery of addiction, on which we can absolutely agree, and upon which we can join in brotherly and harmonious action.

This is the great news the book, Alcoholics Anonymous, carries to those who suffer from addiction. (An appropriate title for the book could possibly be – The Antidote For Addiction – more than 150 Twelve Step Programs are built on its foundation)

Nearly all of us have – recovered. We have SOLVED the addiction problem.

The physical cravings, along with the obsessive thoughts and compulsive feelings to use pills, alcohol, or drugs, have been – removed.

They do not exist for us.

We are neither cocky, nor are we afraid.

This is our experience; this is how we react, so long aswe stay in fit spiritual condition. (A. A. Page 17, 85)

Today, make a fresh start. Read the Doctor’s Opinion. Renew – your spirit.

Namaste, (The light in me “honors” the light in you.)

THE CENTER OF YOUR SOUL By Jack Kelly

There is a buried treasure
In the center of your soul
Its value you can’t measure
Its content you can’t hold.

There is a fertile garden
In the center of your soul
Where the soil begins to harden
When addiction takes its toll.

There is a sacred temple
In the center of your soul
Where the silence quiets the mind
Where serenity can’t be stole.

There is a loving Spirit
In the center of your soul
Let it guide you on your journey
Let it take you to your goal.

There is a road less traveled
In the center of your soul
Where mysteries are unraveled
Where the truth will make you whole.

Come meet the timeless teacher
In the center of your soul
Discover the precious diamond
Hidden in the coal.

Namaste, (The light in me “honors” the light in you.)

Brain Training Centers of Florida Helping Addicts To Recover With A Mind,Body,And Spirit Treatment Plan.

Addiction

To date, Brain State Technologies of Scottsdale, Arizona has provided successful life changing “brain training” for more than 7,000 individuals across the United States and around the world. Many of these initially presented with issues of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, chronic depression and/or anxiety being critical factors in their substance abuse/dependence; many of these factors seemed to be causing multiple relapses following traditional treatment modalities. At the same time, however, the primary focus of BST has been to ameliorate the physical and emotional suffering of the ever increasing numbers of men and women who have sought the assistance of BST and/or its affiliates while continually updating BST computer technology and neuro-biofeedback programs. As a result, long term and large number empirical studies have not yet been completed and are still approximately 18 months to two years away.

Brain Training Centers of Florida was established in early 2008 to incorporate BST programming into alcohol and drug addictions programming in South Florida. Skip Flynn, Psy.D., CAP has been registered by Lee Gerdes, BST founder and CEO, to develop specific outpatient and inpatient brain training protocols for clients who are abusing and/or dependent on alcohol or drugs. With this goal in mind, BTCF has developed effective outpatient alcohol and drug treatment programs wrapping the treatment around Brain Training.

At present, the preferred operating protocol for “brain training” is an Intensive course of one 90 minute assessment and thirty 90-120 minute brain training sessions. The assessment now includes 17 electroencephalogram readings from the temporal, parietal, optical and frontal lobes and along the midline of the brain. Three one-minute readings – eyes closed, eyes partially open and eyes open – are completed for each combination of electrode placements with a final two setting combination.

Within minutes of the initial assessment, Brain Training protocols – a total of seven segments (matrices) of neuro-biofeedback for each 90 minute training session – are developed by the local (daughter) and Scottsdale-based (mother) computers. Each matrix will target specific areas of the brain with sound energies designed to promote balance/homeostasis between and among brain areas. Ideally, clients will undergo ten sessions within five days – allowing new neuro-pathways to crystallize or become permanent.

Experience in Scottsdale and in offices throughout the U.S. have indicated that Brain Training has proven extremely effective in quickly and significantly relieving cravings, mitigating depression, lowering anxiety levels, and improving the client’s sleep – in quality and duration.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL:

“The attainment of greater humility is the ‘foundation principle’ behind each of the Twelve Steps.” (12&12 P 70)

HOW IMPORTANT IS HUMILITY IN OUR RECOVERY?

Without some degree of humility, no alcoholic or addict can stay sober. Nearly all of us have found that unless we were willing to develop - much more - of this precious quality than what was required just for sobriety, we still didn’t stand much chance of becoming truly happy. Without humility, it’s difficult to find a useful purpose for our lives, or, in adversity, be able to summon the faith that can meet any emergency.” (12&12 P 70)

Where humility had formerly stood for a forced feeding of humble pie, as we began to learn more about this step, and the true meaning of humility, we began to see it as the - nourishing ingredient - which could give us SERENITY. This improved perception of humility started another “revolutionary change” in our outlook. Our eyes began to open to the immense values which come straight out of - painful ego puncturing. We began to “see.” We began to “listen.” Everywhere we looked, we saw failure and misery transformed, by humility, into priceless assets. We heard story after story of how - humility - brought strength out of weakness, courage out of fear, and gratitude out of self-pity. In every case - pain - had been the price of admission into a new life. But this “admission price” purchased more than we expected. It brought a measure of humility, which we soon discovered to be - a healer of pain. We began to fear pain less, and desire humility more. (12&12 - P 74, 75)

During this process of learning more about humility, the most profound result of all was - the change in our attitude toward God… We began to get over the idea that the Higher Power was a sort of “major league pinch hitter” to be called upon - only in emergencies. Many of us who thought ourselves “religious” woke up to the limitations of this - self-serving and self-centered attitude. The notion that we could still live our own lives, God helping a little now and then, as we went from crisis to crisis, began to evaporate.” (12&12 Page 75)

“As we explore our attitude toward humility, it might be well if we inquire, once more, just what our deeper objectives are. Each of us would like to live at peace with ourselves, with our loved ones, with our neighbors, etc. We would like to be assured that the grace of God can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. We have seen that character defects - based upon short sighted or unworthy desires - are the obstacles that block our path toward these objectives. We now clearly see that we have been making - unreasonable demands - upon:

· Ourselves

· Others, and

· God

And the “chief activator” of our defects had been - self-centered fear:

FEAR that we would lose something we already possessed, or

FEAR that we would fail to get something we demanded.” (12&12 Page 76)

“Fear – it was an evil and corroding thread; the entire fabric of our lives - was shot through with it.” (A.A. P 67)

“We were driven by a hundred forms of fear…”

WE HAD TO ASK OURSELVES “WHY” WE HAD ALL THESE FEARS.

Wasn’t it because self-reliance failed us?

Self-reliance was good, as far as it went, but - it didn’t go far enough.

Some of us had great self-confidence, but it didn’t fully solve the fear problem - or any other.

When it made us cocky, it was worse. Perhaps there is a better way – we think so. For we are now on a different basis, the basis of - trusting and relying upon - God’s guidance and direction. We - trust - God’s infinite wisdom rather than our own finite selves. We are in the world to play the role He assigns. Just to the extent that we think, feel, or act as we think He would have us think, feel, or act, does He enable us to - match calamity with serenity.

Namaste, (The light in me “honors” the light in you.)

What Must We “Do” If We Want to Have Our Character Defects “Removed?”

If an alcoholic or addict fails to perfect and enlarge their “spiritual life” through:

Work – Meditation, and prayer,

Self-sacrifice – Taking time to help others they will not survive the certain trials and low spots ahead. If we do not work, we will eventually relapse, and if we continue to relapse, we will eventually die from our disease, or wish we were dead. (A.A. Page-15)

Many of us are “loners.” We often carry this trait into our recovery program. We go to meetings. On occasion, we read recovery literature. We may even have daily phone conversations with other alcoholics or addicts.

What’s missing here? Accountability! When we’re loners, we are not accountable to anyone. How can we solve this problem? We can solve this problem by first of all becoming “accountable” to ourselves. It would help to have a

RELAPSE PREVENTION BAROMETER to help us keep track of the progress we are making in our recovery.

I’ll provide you with this over the next few days, but before going any further, let’s define character:

WHAT IS CHARACTER?

The dictionary defines character as: “Moral or ethical strength; QUALITIES of honesty, integrity, or courage.

WHAT “QUALITIES” DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME AN “ADDICTION SURVIVOR?”

The same qualities it takes to win a Super Bowl, climb Mount Everest, start a business, get in good shape, etc.

1. Courage: The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty or pain without fear; bravery.

2. Commitment: To pledge, bind, or obligate one-self to achieve a goal; to burn the bridges of escape behind you.

3. Honesty: Freedom – from deceit or fraud, truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness.

4. Humility: Free from vanity, boastfulness, or grandiosity; not arrogant, a - realistic view - of one’s limitations.

5. Discipline: An exercise, regimen, or - series of steps - that improves one’s skill and control.

6. Fortitude: Strength of mind that enables one to endure temporary pain or adversity with courage.

7. Persistence: To persevere in spite of difficulty, discomfort, discouragement, or obstacles.

8. Forgiveness: The wisdom and courage to let go of anger or resentment toward oneself, or another; compassion.

9. Patience: Quietly and steadily persevering, bearing hardship, or discomfort with fortitude and calmness.

10. Altruism: Unselfish concern for the welfare of others.

11. Resilience: Springing back, rebounding; recovering from adversity.

12. Teamwork: Cooperative and coordinated effort with others to achieve a common goal.

ACUPUNCTURE HELPS ADDICTS STICK TO RECOVERY

ACUPUNCTURE HELPS ADDICTS
STICK TO RECOVERY
People trying to move away from addictions to drugs and alcohol face
a very difficult task. However, by adding Acupuncture to detoxification
treatment, many are learning that it is easier to stick with their program and find the successful road out.
One such success came out of a one-year study conducted in Portland, Oregon, where individuals received Acupuncture as part of their recovery.
In that program, people who received Acupuncture detoxification treatment were two times more likely to continue their rehabilitation therapy than those not getting it. In this same study, more than 70% of people treated with Acupuncture successfully completed detoxification, compared with only 50% of those who did not receive the treatment. For those detoxifying from alcohol only, the success rate was 90%. Recidivism (tendency to relapse) was reduced to only 5%.
A similar blind study of chronic alcoholics in Hennepin County,
Minnesota had far better results among the Acupuncture group. Here,
37% of the treatment group receiving Acupuncture completed the program while only 7.4% of the control group made it.
One person who received Acupuncture as part of his recovery program had this to report: “I have enjoyed what I believe to be reasonable success after 21 sessions within a four-week period with a weekly follow-up of one session per week ever since. My alcoholic compulsion is markedly reduced with the side benefit of elevated vigor and more energy from day to day.
“I literally do not have the compulsion or craving. An occasional
thought of drinking passes by with no pangs or lingering thoughts. I’ve read about a doctor who said that the only necessary proof of
Acupuncture’s worth was the very fact that it worked. Period. It just
works.”
