When it is Mother’s Day, what is it that we all think about – besides honoring our moms?

We think about how we can treat them in a way that is relaxing or with some sort of honor.

Many moms get breakfast in bed or go out to a brunch special….they get massages or flowers and other sweet presents too.

Why not give mom a flower or something nice every day? Why do we only think about self-care or mom-care one day a year? Whether we play board games with our mom, or play cards, or share a meal….it’s enriching to connect with our mom (and parents) on any given day.

If we can bring back the family meal at home then why not bring back honoring parents and grandparents every day by just being with them?

I know it’s hard to always connect because life throws is a metric wrench in with our SAE wrenches and nuts….but we still have to figure how to work it.

Don’t we love it when people come to us and share with us after a long time? Just think how others will feel when we come to them? Human contact and sharing is more valuable than any gift or dinner.

Electronic mail, snail mail, texting, phone calls, are all good to have and thank goodness we have these modes of communication….but physical human contact is very special an meaningful. No photo can ever capture its essence and its warmth. That connection and the feeling stays in our hearts and our souls. It’s the bond that connects and stays with us.

Here’s your prescription for healing your soul: Take a hug at least four times a day.
Prescription for your heart and productive longevity: Have a heart-to-heart conversation at least two times a day.
Prescription for a strong soul: Have a belly laugh one to two times a day.

A letter from our founder, Mr. Eric Clapton

For many years I have visited Antigua, the beautiful Caribbean island located in the heart of the West Indies. Antigua has always been a special refuge – a safe place, a serene place where one can begin the process of healing from even the most devastating events and life situations.

As a recovering addict and alcoholic, many people over the years spoke with me about the problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse on the island. Subsequently, around 1993, I began to speak with more and more people about the possibility of founding a Centre on the island for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. There was certainly a need, and so the dream and the vision were born.

My vision was to create a Centre of the highest caliber to treat people of the Caribbean and throughout the world. The Centre would be staffed with experienced and internationally recognized professionals. The cost of treatment would be held to the lowest possible level, ensuring affordability and accessibility. And most importantly, this non-profit Centre would provide treatment scholarships for people of the Caribbean region and around the world.

Well, this vision became a reality and Crossroads opened its doors to the world in 1998. Since then it has quickly developed into an internationally recognized Treatment Centre of Excellence, providing services to individuals and their families suffering from the devastating effects of addiction.

Crossroads is like no other Treatment Centre. It is the perfect place to begin the road of recovery and utilizes a combination of effective therapies to address addiction and recovery, while capturing the spiritual serenity that many have found unique to Antigua. Within the serene, healing atmosphere individuals participate in a structured 29-day residential 12 step based program that allows clients to experience a whole person wellness approach to recovery.

We believe that the majority of individuals suffering from addiction have the capacity for recovery if given the proper foundation to begin their journey. At Crossroads we help provide that foundation.

The Renewal Centre at Crossroads is designed to offer people in various stages of recovery an opportunity to revive and refresh, their recovery experience. We provide a safe, supportive environment to explore various issues with an emphasis on creating balance in one’s life. Through staff facilitation and group interaction, participants experience a powerful week of self awareness and rediscovery.

All of our recovery retreats are founded in the Twelve Steps as well as the Crossroads Centre whole person approach to recovery. This means that in addition to Twelve Step studies, lectures, facilitated group discussions and individual assignments, participants are introduced to complementary therapies such as: yoga, fitness activities, meditation, and massage therapy. Our recovery retreats, while providing an opportunity for intensive self-discovery and awareness, also combine off -site activities unique to Antigua to make for an enriched experience. As our participants know only too well, Antigua is the perfect place to continue the journey of recovery.

Please note: If in recovery, these programs are designed for individuals with a minimum of 60 days of abstinence/ sobriety. People who are actively using alcohol or drugs addictively are not appropriate for this program. Crossroads Centre is an alcohol and drug-free facility and all participants are expected to adhere to this policy.

Reinvent Your Recovery Recovery is about more than just abstinence or sobriety. It involves continued growth and attention in order to develop into something that is healthy and vital, yet it is common for people in various stages of recovery to feel that there is something missing or less satisfying in their personal recovery. Through lectures, small group sessions and various complementary therapies, we will help participants reinvent their recovery experience into something that is dynamic and vibrant. All of this takes place in breathtaking Antigua West Indies, and incorporates the many sights, sounds and experiences of this nature island. Cleansing through de-cluttering your space. This has been an on-going task for me within the past few weeks. I started my Spring cleaning early. I have been going through every drawer and every piece of paper…..I see the memories, and for each item that doesn’t serve a purpose I throw away or give to good will.

This process is quite emotionally draining but it is also rewarding and liberating. For each drawer and cabinet I clean out, I can actually breathe better!! And I feel lighter as well.

De-cluttering is very cleansing and healing. It makes you re-evaluate what you own and where you are in life. Some things are like re-visiting a time capsule and after going through it you toss some and keep others for your future.

Don’t give up halfway through a drawer. Stick with it and follow through. I know it feels daunting, but you have to see what is serving you and what isn’t serving you.

…………and think about how much MORE space you will have when you are done!! It literally makes you breathe better!! How healing is that?? It’s the best feeling ever!

Resnick’s memoir, “Love Junkie: A Memoir of Love and Sex Addiction,” candidly chronicles her lifelong attraction to bad relationships and sex in order to fulfill the need for love. Resnick describes how a loveless childhood brought about her addiction to relationships with really bad men. That her mother’s mental instability caused her to marry a man who was incapable of love, and how this set Rachel up for destructive relationships. Such as the tattooed ex-con named Eddie, who was prone to vulgar verbal attacks and fits of terrifying physical rage.



Resnick will explain how her low self-esteem caused her to chase after dangerous, unavailable and cruel romantic partners. Also, how her addiction would lead her to engage in lewd, often risky acts. We will discuss what love addiction is and how it differs from a healthy relationship. You will learn what the three big red flags that might tell a person that he or she’s in love-junkie territory. PATHOLOGICAL GAMBLING

The term pathological gambling is used to best describe as having an addiction to gambling. The term is also used to make a diagnosis when an individual meets the criteria of having a problem with gambling. The diagnosis is listed along with many other forms of addictions in a manual called the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders. The criteria for pathological gambling includes: 1. a need to increase the amount of money in order to achieve the desired excitement,2. repeated unsuccessful efforts to cut back or stop,3. becomes restless and irritable when trying to cut back, 4.lies to family members, employers, and therapists, 5. has committed illegal acts such as forgery, theft, and fraud and, 6. has jeopardized relationships, job, or career opportunities. There are additional criteria listed but if 5 of the 10 that are noted in the manual are accounted for, the diagnosis of pathological gambling can be made. It is quite easy to see how an addiction to gambling can be a crossover to other forms of addiction. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, food or sex the brain does not differentiate, it ends up in the same place. This point is best made when defining addiction. Upon review of recent studies from the literature on addictions, the following definition is used. The four basic components of addiction include:1 the individual receives some form of pleasure,2 the behavior in seeking out the drug, alcohol, food, or gambling is clearly compulsive,3. there is a loss of control with use or intake, and 4.denial. The denial is not that there is use but of the resulting severity of problems with their use has on their lives.

Pathological gambling does have its own specific components that is important to note. According to the Journal of Gambling Studies there are an estimated 2 million American adults who become compulsive gamblers at some point in their lifetime. The Journal goes on to report that in any given year about 4.8 million Americans are considered problem gamblers. There are common forms of gambling that an individual can develop an addiction to. They include sports betting, lottery, slot machines, and all the other forms of casino gambling.

Pathological gambling also has its specific signs and behaviors. Compulsive gambling habits include: taking time away from family and work, quitting after feeling remorse only to start all over again, gambling until your last dollar is gone, gambling with money needed to pay bills, lying stealing or selling personal valuables to get gambling money, dreaming of the “big win” and gambling when feeling depressed.


In conclusion it is easy to see how gambling can become an addiction similarly to alcohol, drugs, food, and sex. Looking at the four components of addiction best proves the point that gambling can be classified as a disease. Therefore as with alcohol and drugs the treatment for pathological gambling according to the Journal Of Gambling Studies and the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry would include cognitive-behavioral skills training with the individual, family and in groups and if necessary medications. At the same time most professionals would agree that a 12 step recovery program is essential when developing a comprehensive treatment plan.

Once upon a time holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas were enjoyed by everyone because they were not full of the stress they are full of today. Sure, the same events happened each year that still happen now. Turkey was served at a big family gathering for Thanksgiving. Gifts were exchanged with family and friends for the Christmas holiday. However, they were done on a much smaller scale. Today everyone rushes around trying to prepare an enormous meal for Thanksgiving and trying to spend their last penny on Christmas gifts. It can be difficult to get through the holidays without loads of stress. However, if you can find a way to create stress free holidays, you will find that you can be happier during the holiday season. Take a look at these three reasons why creating stress free holidays can make you happy. No Pressure Starting from the bottom, the number three reason why you should create a stress free holiday plan is because when you do so, there will be no pressure. No pressure to max out your credit cards on gifts for others, no pressure to serve the perfect dinner to everyone you know, and no pressure to volunteer for every single holiday activity taking place. Getting through the holidays with no pressure may seem impossible, but its not. When you are honest with everyone around you and honest with yourself, you will know that it can be done. Put price limits on gift giving. Make a deal with yourself that you won't commit to more than one or two activities a week. Doing these little things can create stress free holidays for you and your family! Enjoying The Little Things. The number two reason you should create a stress free holiday plan is so you can enjoy the little things. Watching the fresh snow fall on the ground, taking a stroll to see the neighborhood holiday lights, savoring the taste of your grandmother's mashed potatoes, or whatever you like to do can be priceless. Unfortunately most people are so busy with other things that they don't take the time to enjoy the smaller holiday blessings. So, be sure that your holiday plan gives you enough time and room to be relaxed and enjoy everything going on.
