Clash of the Titans: Will The Fight between the Bulls and the Bears End in Tears?

By Dan Ascani
©July 31, 2010
Seven months into 2010, the battle of the bulls and the bears on Wall Street still continues ferociously. So does the battle for recovery in the underlying economy.
The battle is so great— the stakes so high—that it wouldn’t be out of line to characterize it as the Clash of the Titans.

After all, the bulls and the bears control trillions of dollars of investor capital and are, by nature, smart people, and conviction about their respective points of view is high. With trillions of those dollars on the buy side controlled by the bulls who feel the market is going higher, and trillions more on the sell side controlled by the bears on the sell side by those who feel the market – and the economy – are destined to go south, this could prove to truly be the Clash of the Titans.

But will it all end in tears for one of the Titan groups, the bulls or the bears? Since the May downturn in stock prices, the economic numbers have worsened, the employment situation is still horrible, and the Federal Reserve Board appears concerned.

So, let’s take our own look at the battle between the bulls and the bears on Wall Street and compare it to the battle within the underlying economy to see what may lie ahead for investors.

In this article: Be sure not to miss Market Outlook, where we take a close look at how volume patterns have historically led significant market declines, and Protect Yourself from the Clash of the Titans, where I reveal techniques to defend your money during sustained market declines.

Where this battle ends up will likely tell investors, consumers, and businesses alike whether they’re in for more economic misery, or a stronger-than-expected recovery is getting underway. Read More
