The Sound Pillow
The Sound Pillow Therapy
November 29, 2009

The Sound Pillow Therapy represents another way in which the philosophy of holistic healing is used to support the physical, mental and spiritual growth for addicts. Healing Sound Pillow Therapy uses a pillow to reproduce sound from any listening device to help addicts to reduce stress and create a sense of balance within and around them. Traditional spiritual and healing practices have recognized the power of sound for thousands of years. Chants, church bells, drumbeats and sung or spoken rituals have been used to alter moods, create different energy states and to facilitate communication with spiritual powers throughout history. All these practitioners have intuitively understood that sound represents energy, energy which can be transmitted and used by humans to reach higher levels of health and consciousness. Practitioners of this ancient ritual enjoy a more complete relaxation and deeper focus during meditation, resulting in greater levels of stress release.

The Sound Pillow offers a rewarding alternative therapy that can be integrated into a client's lifelong meditative practice to reduce the stresses of life that addicts all look to escape. The Sound Pillow put one on every client’s bed and the new comers will have help dealing with those sleepless nights. The new comer complaint list is as followed:I Can’t SleepI have AnxietyI mind always racesI can’t focusI feel stressedI can’t concentrateFear keeps me upNot knowing my future is making me angryThis with many more very confusing conversations are going on in the newly recovered addicts head. Help The Band Stop playing introduce the Sound Pillow to your Addiction Treatment like the other treatment centers around the country.

•No Expensive Hardware
•No Pre-programming
•No Expensive Programs
•No Counselors needed
•No Certification Required to reduce the stress helps clean up the mess.

Call Today at 877-799-8773 or www.soundpillow.com. Let us tell you the results and show you how it works.

A Healthy Heart and Mind During The Holidays Can Be Possible
November 23, 2009

Mashed potatoes, homemade stuffing, chocolate cake, and pie may sound like a good mix of foods for a holiday celebration. How ever, they are not a good mix for a good diet. If you are trying to stick with your healthy heart diet throughout the holidays, you won't be shocked to know that you will face your ultimate temptations during the holiday times. It can be more than difficult to stick with your healthy body plan.

Many people abandon it totally, only to start back up after the New Year. But, if you are serious about staying healthy, you should continue your regular diet and exercise program, no matter what holiday is rolling around! Diet Sure, it can be extremely challenging to stick with your diet during the holidays. When you sit down to Thanksgiving dinner at your grandmother's house, you won't want to offend her by passing on the stuffing and cheese potatoes. So, you will have to do some thinking.

If you are afraid to offend those cooking for you, be sure to take a little of everything. If you stick with small portions you should be good to go. Don't finish everything on your plate however. If you get the opportunity to bring something for the dinner, be sure you choose something that is healthy. That way you can have more of that healthy dish and less of the fattening dishes.

If you are lucky enough to cook the entire meal, then you can add heart healthy foods throughout. Your family might not be too keen on the idea of eating healthy at first, but they will thank you later for your good judgment.

Three Reasons Why Creating Stress Free Holidays Can Make You Happy

It is incredibly sad that American holidays are turning into huge festive stress-fests! Once upon a time holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas were enjoyed by everyone because they were not full of the stress they are full of today. Sure, the same events happened each year that still happen now. Turkey was served at a big family gathering for Thanksgiving. Gifts were exchanged with family and friends for the Christmas holiday. However, they were done on a much smaller scale. Today everyone rushes around trying to prepare an enormous meal for Thanksgiving and trying to spend their last penny on Christmas gifts. It can be difficult to get through the holidays without loads of stress. However, if you can find a way to create stress free holidays, you will find that you can be happier during the holiday season. Take a look at these three reasons why creating stress free holidays can make you happy. No Pressure Starting from the bottom, the number three reason why you should create a stress free holiday plan is because when you do so, there will be no pressure. No pressure to max out your credit cards on gifts for others, no pressure to serve the perfect dinner to everyone you know, and no pressure to volunteer for every single holiday activity taking place. Getting through the holidays with no pressure may seem impossible, but its not. When you are honest with everyone around you and honest with yourself, you will know that it can be done. Put price limits on gift giving. Make a deal with yourself that you won't commit to more than one or two activities a week. Doing these little things can create stress free holidays for you and your family! Enjoying The Little Things. The number two reason you should create a stress free holiday plan is so you can enjoy the little things. Watching the fresh snow fall on the ground, taking a stroll to see the neighborhood holiday lights, savoring the taste of your grandmother's mashed potatoes, or whatever you like to do can be priceless. Unfortunately most people are so busy with other things that they don't take the time to enjoy the smaller holiday blessings. So, be sure that your holiday plan gives you enough time and room to be relaxed and enjoy everything going on.
Love & light,

THE OUTSIDE IS THE INSIDE:

Diagnosing in Traditional Chinese Medicine

By: MaryEllen Velahos

Many sources date the practice of acupuncture at around 5,000 years old. While it is a very effective modality it is surprisingly low-tech in its techniques. Needles have evolved from the stone chards of antiquity to the sterile single use stainless steel filaments that we use today but by and large we are using the same techniques of diagnosis and treatment as described in the Nan Jing text of 2,500 years ago. As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I find the most challenging aspect of this profession to be in diagnosing the nature of a patient’s disorder. This challenge is what makes practicing Chinese medicine so exciting. While the nuances of diagnosis can take a lifetime to perfect, there is a simple principle that can say it all – the outside is the inside. In other words, what we see and feel on the outside of the body is a reflection of the condition and functioning of the internal organs.
We have several basic techniques to assess a patient and your acupuncturist has probably briefed you on these techniques. We examine the tongue, take pulses and ask questions based on what we see. By examining the tongue we can see the condition of all the internal organs. Before the advent of MRIs, blood testing and EKGs, Chinese physicians were looking at the color, shape and coating on the tongue and gaining knowledge about the health of any particular person that could rival some of the most advanced diagnostic tools of the 21st century. The tongue of a healthy toddler has the ideal qualities (color, shape, texture) of a healthy tongue and healthy internal organs. The conditions that vary from that ideal would be clues to the health or disease of any patient. Is the coating on the tongue too thick? Perhaps the patient suffers from a digestive imbalance. Is the tongue swollen with teeth marks or scallops around the edges? The spleen energy system could be in a weakened state. Is the color of the tongue scarlet red, pale and whitish or more purple tinged? All of this is information for the TCM practitioner to use in order to assess the overall condition of the patient.
Along with assessing the tongue we also take pulses at each wrist. Like allopathic physicians, we check the rate of the pulse, but that is just one aspect of our assessment. We feel to see if it is too hard or too soft. Does the quality of the pulse change with light pressure or disappear when pressed? Is the pulse felt deep within the wrist or more active at the top layer of the skin? Chinese pulse taking involves feeling the quality of the pulse at twelve different areas of the wrist – six on each side. Each pulse point that we “listen to” represents one of the twelve interdependent energy systems that flow through the body and keep it in working condition. When the energy systems are flowing freely and completely, we have health. When there is a deficiency or excess or blockage in one energy system, it can affect all of the systems. It is the job of the TCM practitioner to figure out where the imbalance lies. We then correct it by inserting tiny acupuncture needles at the appropriate areas and restoring healthy function of the energy system. Once the energy meridian is corrected, the body is in condition to restore itself back to proper operation.
In addition to pulse taking and tongue diagnosis, we also ask questions about all of the bodily functions even when they don’t seem related to the reason for the visit to the acupuncturist. We are interested in all of the products and by-products of the human body – what color is the urine, what is the quality of the bowel movements – are they too hard, too soft, not complete enough? What is the quality of sleep? Excessive and vivid dreaming can indicate problems with the digestive process. Difficulty in falling asleep indicates a different type of disorder than difficulty in staying asleep.
Once we have all the information from our diagnostic exam we can formulate our diagnosis. Diagnosing a patient according to principles of Chinese medicine can identify disorders - called patterns, with names such as Liver Qi (pronounced chee – this is the energy that flows through the meridians that run up and down on the whole body like electrical cords that contain an energy stream) Stagnation or Kidney Yang Deficiency. This does not necessarily mean that the liver or kidneys have a disease. The name of the pattern identifies that the energy system that is imbalanced. It has the name of Kidney energy system or Liver energy system because it passes through or energizes the kidney or the liver. For example, someone who comes to the clinic for chronic headaches may find that their TCM diagnosis is Liver Qi Stagnation. Obviously, a headache does not happen in the liver but the meridian of energy that passes through the actual liver of the body does also run through areas of the head and when it is imbalanced a headache can result as the symptom. Once we use needles to correct the function of the Liver Meridian – often placed in the foot and leg – we can cause the energy to move in the correct way so as to relieve the pain in the head. Many patients are surprised to find that while they come to the acupuncture clinic for a problem that exists in their abdomen or head we may actually insert needles in the ankles or foot or knees to heal them.
What I have presented here is a very simplified version of what we do as TCM practitioners. It should serve to explain why Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic system that can heal the whole body, mind and spirit and bring about true holistic health.

Dr. Palmer has extensive experience working with eating disorders and addictions and in a variety of mental health settings including at several inpatient, residential and outpatient facilities. Her specialty is eating disorder recovery and relationships, but she works with individuals, couples, and families of those suffering from a variety of complex mental health and relational issues, and completed residency working with those with schizophrenia, DID, addictions and trauma. In the realm of eating disorders, Palmer is known for establishing the first ethnicity, culture and identity group in the U.S. at the renowned inpatient treatment facility, which earned her national recognition. She founded a successful eating disorders program called WISE at Hollywood Pavilion Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, and served as the Clinical Director. The program is one of the few in the US accepting medicare for the treatment of eating disorders. During her term participants in the program achieved extraordinary success and healing, many of them experienced long-term benefits of recovery for the first time in many years. The WISE Program (Women’s Institute for Self-Empowerment and Sensible Eating) now extends to The Renew Center of Florida in Boca Raton under Dr. Palmer’s leadership. The Boca Raton program is a modification of the original design, customized for the clients The Renew Center serves.

Dr. Palmer's work in the eating disorder field and beyond has been attractive to numerous magazine, television, and radio publications. She recently completed articles for publication, one of which appeared in the professional Journal of Feminist Family Therapy and Family Therapy Magazine. Additionally, Palmer founded the popular www. MyEDHelp.com in 2006. She also serves as an adjunct professor for master's and doctoral students at Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Palmer attended University of Vermont and studied philosophy and pre-medicine. She then graduated from New York University with a dual degree in journalism and sociology. She later earned a Master's degree in marriage and family therapy followed by a PhD at Nova Southeastern University. After achieving national recognition as the youngest state delegate at Miss USA in her early years, she then pursued the field of broadcast journalism. She entered an interesting career as a general assignment TV news reporter working at a variety of media outlets throughout the country; worked at The White House, where she served as an intern for the press secretary’s office covering vice-presidential and presidential radio news events; had a stint at CNN in Atlanta, where she served as an editorial assistant turned weekend writer; and as a television news reporter at CBS and NBC affiliates. She later changed her life story to include a new direction that seemed more purposeful and fulfilling, at which point she reinvented her career to include a life of vitality, harmony, and to make a difference for others!

While Dr. Palmer now prefers to spend her time behind the scenes developing programs, doing research, writing articles, and helping clients to reinvent themselves and overcome obstacles, her passion has not faltered. She is dedicated to coaching and healing others on ways to manifest their dreams and aspirations in their everyday lives. She brings a breadth of knowledge, experience, compassion, and dedication to every endeavor she commits herself to.

"Substance dependence"

"Substance dependence When an individual persists in use of alcohol or other drugs despite problems related to use of the substance, substance dependence may be diagnosed. Compulsive and repetitive use may result in tolerance to the effect of the drug and withdrawal symptoms when use is reduced or stopped. This, along with Substance Abuse is considered Substance Use Disorders...
Terminology has become quite complicated in the field. Pharmacologists continue to speak of addiction from a physiologic standpoint (some call this a physical dependence); psychiatrists refer to the disease state as psychological dependence; most other physicians refer to the disease as addiction.
The medical community now makes a careful theoretical distinction between physical dependence (characterized by symptoms of withdrawal) and psychological dependence (or simply addiction). Addiction is now narrowly defined as "uncontrolled, compulsive use"; if there is no harm being suffered by, or damage done to, the patient or another party, then clinically it may be considered compulsive, but to the definition of some it is not categorized as 'addiction'. In practice, the two kinds of addiction are not always easy to distinguish. Addictions often have both physical and psychological components.
There is also a lesser known situation called pseudo-addiction. A patient will exhibit drug-seeking behavior reminiscent of psychological addiction, but they tend to have genuine pain or other symptoms that have been under-treated. Unlike true psychological addiction, these behaviors tend to stop when the pain is adequately treated. The obsolete term physical addiction is deprecated, because of its connotations. In modern pain management with opioids physical dependence is nearly universal. While opiates are essential in the treatment of acute pain, the benefit of this class of medication in chronic pain is not well proven. Clearly, there are those who would not function well without opiate treatment; on the other hand, many states are noting significant increases in non-intentional deaths related to opiate use High-quality, long-term studies are needed to better delineate the risks and benefits of chronic opiate use.
Physical dependency
Physical dependence on a substance is defined by the appearance of characteristic withdrawal symptoms when the substance is suddenly discontinued. Opiates, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, alcohol and nicotine induce physical dependence. On the other hand, some categories of substances share this property and are still not considered addictive: cortisone, beta blockers and most antidepressants are examples. So, while physical dependency can be a major factor in the psychology of addiction and most often becomes a primary motivator in the continuation of an addiction, the initial primary attribution of an addictive substance is usually its ability to induce pleasure, although with continued use the goal is not so much to induce pleasure as it is to relieve the anxiety caused by the absence of a given addictive substance, causing it to become used compulsively.
Some substances induce physical dependence or physiological tolerance - but not addiction - for example many laxatives, which are not psychoactive; nasal decongestants, which can cause rebound congestion if used for more than a few days in a row; and some antidepressants, most notably venlafaxine, paroxetine and sertraline, as they have quite short half-lives, so stopping them abruptly causes a more rapid change in the neurotransmitter balance in the brain than many other antidepressants. Many non-addictive prescription drugs should not be suddenly stopped, so a doctor should be consulted before abruptly discontinuing them.
The speed with which a given individual becomes addicted to various substances varies with the substance, the frequency of use, the means of ingestion, the intensity of pleasure or euphoria, and the individual's genetic and psychological susceptibility. Some people may exhibit alcoholic tendencies from the moment of first intoxication, while most people can drink socially without ever becoming addicted. Opioid dependent individuals have different responses to even low doses of opioids than the majority of people, although this may be due to a variety of other factors, as opioid use heavily stimulates pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters in the brain. Nonetheless, because of these variations, in addition to the adoption and twin studies that have been well replicated, much of the medical community is satisfied that addiction is in part genetically moderated. That is, one's genetic makeup may regulate how susceptible one is to a substance and how easily one may become psychologically attached to a pleasurable routine.
Eating disorders are complicated pathological mental illnesses and thus are not the same as addictions described in this article. Eating disorders, which some argue are not addictions at all, are driven by a multitude of factors, most of which are highly different than the factors behind addictions described in this article. It has been reported, however, that patients with eating disorders can successfully be treated with the same non-pharmacological protocols used in patients with chemical addiction disorders. Gambling is another potentially addictive behavior with some biological overlap. Conversely gambling urges have emerged with the administration of Mirapex (pramipexole), a dopamine agonist.
The DSM definition of addiction can be boiled down to compulsive use of a substance (or engagement in an activity) despite ongoing negative consequences—this is also a summary of what used to be called "psychological dependency." Physical dependence, on the other hand, simply needs a substance to function. Humans are all physically dependent on oxygen, food and water. A drug can cause physical dependence and not addiction (for example, some blood pressure medications, which can produce fatal withdrawal symptoms if not tapered) and can cause addiction without physical dependence (the withdrawal symptoms associated with cocaine are all psychological, there is no associated vomiting or diarrhea as there is with opioid withdrawal).
In the now outdated conceptualization of the problem, psychological dependency leads to psychological withdrawal symptoms (such as cravings, irritability, insomnia, depression, anorexia, etc). Addiction can in theory be derived from any rewarding behavior, and is believed to be strongly associated with the dopaminergic system of the brain's reward system (as in the case of cocaine and amphetamines). Some claim that it is a habitual means to avoid undesired activity, but typically it is only so to a clinical level in individuals who have emotional, social, or psychological dysfunctions (psychological addiction is defined as such), replacing normal positive stimuli not otherwise attained.
A person who is physically dependent, but not psychologically dependent can have their dose slowly dropped until they are no longer physically dependent. However, if that person is psychologically dependent, they are still at serious risk for relapse into abuse and subsequent physical dependence.
Psychological dependence does not have to be limited only to substances; even activities and behavioral patterns can be considered addictions, if they become uncontrollable, e.g. problem gambling, Internet addiction, computer addiction, sexual addiction / pornography addiction, overeating, self-injury, compulsive buying, or work addiction.

Food Addiction

So often people get in a cycle of depression and eating for comfort and develop a food addiction. The cycle perpetuates the depression and eating and it goes around and around. Addiction happens and the individual is caught in the cycle of addiction long before they identify a problem with food. Many individuals would like to be able to say there were no warning signs of an eating disorder. Individuals in recovery refer to that rationalization as denial.
Addiction whether to food, alcohol or drugs develop over-time. As the disease progresses so does the behavior, the lie the person tells themselves is I can control this on my own I don't need help. That is typically when the individual has crossed the line into the addiction and are unable to get out of the cycle. Food is a required means of energy used to fuel the body, when food is misused and turns against the person invariably the person blames the food, people around them, his or her job, spouse, family, friends anyone except themselves.
Typically the blame goes on until the person says enough and starts to recognize the only way out of the eating disorder cycle is through it. No one ever said it was going to be easy; the addiction process did not happen overnight and will not go away overnight. Finding an eating disorder treatment program to help the person overcome the addictive behavior patterns and to help them formulate a plan to live a life without using and abusing food is essential for the recovery process. After reading this article he or she feels motivated and ready to break free from the cycle of food addiction contact an eating disorder treatment program and begin the life intended. Joanna M. The Sound Pillow Therapy

The Sound Pillow Therapy

The new comer complaint list is as followed:

I Can’t Sleep

I have Anxiety

I mind always races

I can’t focus

I feel stressed

I can’t concentrate

Fear keeps me up

Not knowing my future is making me angry

This with many more very confusing conversations are going on in the newly recovered addicts head. Help The Band Stop playing
