Living Soul to Soul

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on May.02, 2011, under Home

What do you see when you look at others? Do you see their greatness or their limitations? And what do you see of yourself in others….your greatness or your limitations?

It is not normal in our societal norm to practice the art of living soul to soul; of considering the greatness of others; of seeing our greatness in the eyes of other individuals. Rather, the current societal norm is one of negating the greatness of others; of focusing on their limitations or ‘errors’ in life and therefore only seeing the limitations and ‘errors’ in our on lives.

If you are ready to begin to accept your own greatness and to live in the conscious knowing of all that you are and all that you came to be, this is the show for you.

If you are willing to consider shifting some of your more limiting beliefs, this is the show for you to listen and consider the possibilities shared during this hour of possibilities.

If you are prepared to begin living consciously in your daily life, this is the show for you! For in this show, The Angelic Realm, Barbara’s guest Anne Burnside, and Barbara will address their perspectives on living Soul to Soul and the benefits that follows this amazing ‘shift’ in living and perceiving others and life.

Barbara’ guest, Anne Burnside, is an educator, parent, author, and soul nurturer specializing in conscious relationships and spiritual development parent. Her recently released book Soul to Soul Parenting: A Guide to Raising a Spiritually Conscious Family is a guidebook for parents using modern, everyday reality and universal, life-affirming themes to expand spiritual awareness in the home.

Join us for this amazing show as The Angelic Realm, Anne Burnside and Barbara Joye share their insights, observations, and possible steps that you might take to begin living in alignment with your soul and engaging all others in a ‘Soul to Soul’ relationship.

At the Creating Café, Barbara Joye, The Shift Guru, discusses societal perceptions that you may want to consider shifting. If you have ever wondered why your life is as it is; if you have ever desired anything different in your life and wondered how to create such a difference; if you are simply an individual with an open mind and a questioning nature, you will want to begin this series and follow the shifts that occur in your life as you begin to consciously create your own life.

You will be delighted and amazed and shifted with this inspiring and enjoyable show. An Easter Basket of Happiness

An Easter Basket of Happiness
by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Apr.25, 2011, under Home

Carol Harblin (CHHC)
Easter is one of those holidays that really FILLS a person completely. There is always plenty of food, almost like Thanksgiving part one, and there is family around too.
Family days like these are so filling, more than a cherry pie and a chocolate bunny. Why do we get so full and yet so calm and content by day’s end?
For Easter, many of us begin a day with God and then it dominoes into all our other family and friend relationships. That is two major primary foods that feed us and nourish us more than our secondary food we consume.
Spirituality and relationships take up more than 75% of the day. On top of that, we still manage to consume copious amounts of lunch or dinner (which almost feels like a Thanksgiving dinner).
Are we tired and full yet?
After eating our meals, the topper of the day would be to go for a family walk. This would fulfill the other primary food of activity!! By walking or even bicycle riding, this makes moving the body fun and it makes the eating worthwhile too.
After a family and spiritually-oriented day, we feel quite satiated and happy. These are the days that allow our bodies to fall asleep with minimal effort.
Imagine if we allowed our every day to encompass family and activity and spirituality/God…then we would have a fulfilling day of events which would allow us to have proper night’s sleep. Who needs sleep aids when we have our primary foods?

A Full Service Detox

Posted on April 7, 2011 by Bill

Religion is extremely important to the great majority of people on this planet. It gives them reasonably coherent systems of ethics and moral guidance, community, support in hard times, and hope for a better life. In many cases, it gives their lives structure and meaning.

I am not a religious person myself, instead thinking of myself as spiritual. I don’t believe the two concepts are by any means one and the same. That’s a discussion beyond where I want to go here, but it’s a necessary observation in order for the following to make sense.

Many of us in recovery — especially early recovery — have difficulty with what we see as the “religious” aspects of the 12 Step fellowships. Again, without getting into a discussion about religion versus spirituality, it has been my experience that those who are able to put such prejudices behind them, take from “the program” what fits for them, and allow others the same privilege, are the ones who are most likely to succeed. Personal problems with concepts of gods and higher powers notwithstanding, it is quite possible to be a part of the 12 Step experience and not delve into religion at all.

Spirituality, however, is an absolute must, and certain concepts that have come to be expressed in terms of prayers and similar ideas are also critical to success. Again, we need to read between the lines of those things and take from them the underlying thoughts and wisdom. Sometimes we even need to show a bit of humility and go along with customs such as prayers at the beginning and end of meetings, understanding that those things are important for many people, and that participating does us no real harm at all.

One prayer that we need to take absolutely to heart is the Serenity Prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.

The ideas embodied in this simple verse are essential to recovery. The Serenity Prayer reminds us to be humble, and helps us organize the things on which we need to be working in order to get and stay sober. If we spend some time thinking about it, in fact, we may discover that it embodies an entire philosophy of life. It reminds us

  • That we are not in charge of anyone or anything but ourselves;
  • That we cannot in fact change anything but ourselves and the way we look at and live our lives;
  • And that if we don’t figure this out and apply the knowledge, we’ll be back in the same controlling frenzy that we just came out of — for what is a life of addiction if not one of trying to control our lives and feelings with chemicals?

Control issues, in fact, are major relapse triggers — and wonderful excuses: ”If she’d just do what I want, everything would be fine!” We forget, sometimes, that “she” is a human being with her own rights and needs, that there are two sides to every situation, and that it is the responsibility of an adult to be able to arrive at solutions that are fair to everyone concerned. You can probably think of similar examples. Maybe you’ve even used a few of them.

The “wisdom to know the difference” has been a major key to my recovery. Other people have their own wants and needs, and they will do what they believe they need to do — just as I do. The only thing I can change is me. When I figured that out, and begin living my life that way, I was soon able to relax and stop running the world. It was so exhausting!

So I say my own version of the Serenity Prayer several times a day, and have been doing so for a long time — actually longer than I spent in my active addictions. I say “May I learn” to accept the things I cannot change…. I don’t put the weight on god’s shoulders. It isn’t god’s job, it’s mine. I try to live my life remembering just how much power I don’t have. I change the things I can, and try to understand the difference. I don’t let personal ideas about religion get in the way of my recovery. My opinions don’t mean a thing if I die, so why take them so seriously when I’m trying to stay alive?

Try something: sit quietly for five minutes and really think about the meaning of that simple little set of verses. Five minutes. It could change your life as it did mine.

Health is a Balancing Act By Carol Harblin

We all want good health, but nobody actually knows what it is and how to get it. We all have a theory, but that is all it is.

People think that if they decrease their calories, carbs, or fat, then they will be in good health. Some believe that if they go to a gym every day then they will be in good health. But are they really in good health? Truly, those people are actually struggling with health issues just like anyone else.

So, then, what is good health anyway?

Good health is being able to balance physical activity, spirituality, relationships, and career while going through the motions of your every day routine. Consider the spirituality, activity, relationships and career the four pieces of our primary food. Primary food is what feeds our whole bodies – not just our stomachs.

Eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruit, and whole grains is also essential too, but without nourishing ourselves with that primary food, life will be very imbalanced. By fulfilling ourselves with this primary food we are enriching ourselves and our lives. We feel more complete and centered.

Next time we reach for an extra serving of food or that hot fudge sundae, think about the four pieces of our primary food and find out what is lacking because we may not need more folate, magnesium, vitamin C, protein, or even more carbs – we might just need that special friend’s ear to listen to us, or a walk around the block, or to find the job that makes you happy.

It’s important to listen to the cues in your body for signs of sickness and it’s important to be aware of the details of your life every day.

Good health means balance. It’s not an easy feat to be healthy and stay healthy. Good health is something we have to work at every day. Attaining good health is not a destination, it’s a journey.

We have to strive for physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, and even financial health every day. It’s not just about how hard our muscles are getting by pumping more weights at the gym – it’s about how to strive to maintain a balance of primary food in addition to our balanced diet.

Remember, don’t walk the journey of health alone - walk it with a health practitioner you trust. The health journey is a beautiful trip that lasts a lifetime.

Marshall Zale. Marshall is an ordained interfaith minister, speaker, writer, and a popular radio show personality
After a powerful awakening, during a four-hour meditation in 2007, he saw how he was living his life in fear, insecurity, co-dependency and self-limiting beliefs. Guilt-filled Addict Submitted by Dawn Maslar-Ranish on December 19th, 2009

Dear Dawn,

I am 23 years old and it only took 7 years of using for my disease to bring me to my knees. However, I have been in recovery now for a little over a year. This is my first time of abstinence and my first time in a program. I have been in a relationship with the man I love for 4 years. He recently asked me to marry him! So of course I said yes but here is my problem. In active addiction, I was a dancer and did many horrible things. My fourth step is full of shame and guilt. I have just finished my fifth step but sex still is a very uncomfortable area for me. I went from being a highly sexual person to withdrawing from anything sexual. I feel like sex is wrong. I know over time I can work through this but not exactly how to work through my shame and guilt while being in a relationship. This is just not fair to him. I want to be able to have sex and feel good about it. Help! A guilt-filled addict.

Dear Guilt-filled Addict,

Oh sweet child, I want to thank you so much for writing. Many women struggle with this issue in silence. The fear and shame keep many from asking questions, so thank you for being so brave!

Almost every woman I have met in recovery has a past that includes sexual shame and guilt. I am so happy that you said you were working the steps. What the steps will do is allow you to come to terms with this. As you continue to work the steps, you will eventually release all that old pain and the guilt and shame will slip away. steps

This phenomenon is very much like the movement of a pendulum. In our addict we are at one end of the spectrum, with extreme sexual behavior. When we get into recovery, all of a sudden we withdraw as you stated, sometimes to the point of complete abstinence. We go from one end of the spectrum to the other end. You may even find yourself going back and forth a bit, until you finally settle down to a place where you feel comfortable with yourself, your past and your sexuality. So, how do you deal with your fiancé in the meantime? Talk to him (without any gory details) and explain you need this time. If he truly loves you he will understand and give you time. If he doesn’t want to give you time, than it indicates he is probably too young or to selfish to be a husband right now.

Just do me two favors: don’t get married until you finish all your steps, and don’t run off confessing anything until you have talked with your sponsor. You have a long and wonderful life ahead of you. I can assure you that you have many talents and qualities that are untapped right now. I commend you are taking the beginning steps to a life beyond your wildest dreams. Well done little one!

Love,

Dawn

I Am In Love Submitted by Dawn Maslar-Ranish on December 27th, 2009

Hello Dawn,

My situation is no different from a lot of women in recovery. I’ve been clean for 10 years, come tomorrow it will be 11 years through God’s grace and mercy and of course these rooms and the steps. I’ve really just now realized that I’ve fallen deeper in love with my husband of 7 years! And that may sound a bit crazy, however, if you knew me you’d know that I still have major trust issues as well as major love issue’s. I was never really loved as a child and I was used and abused in a very long relationship (22 years) while I was using. So, when I met and married my husband, I loved him, however I really fell in love with him during the last three years we’ve been married. I now think that I didn’t trust myself enough to really let go and fall in love with him because I was afraid if I did, he’d hurt me! Does that sound strange or crazy to you?

Dear In Love,

I just adore this letter! What a wonderful thing to write about – being in love with your husband. You ask me if it’s strange or crazy that you have grown to love him? My answer is no. In fact, I have a totally different word for it…are you ready? Your marriage is healthy! Growing to love someone and loving them more and more as the time goes on is the model of health.in love

What’s unhealthy is expecting instant intimacy, or love at first sight. As I explained earlier in another blog, love at first sight is simply a hormone induced haze. It will eventually wear off. Hopefully by the time the trance wears off you have gotten to know each other and developed true love.

You stated you had major issue’s that may have prevented you from falling in love earlier. This makes perfect sense. Many people in recovery have intimacy issues. Many of us build a wall around our hearts for protection. Slowly, as your trust grew, you were able to dismantle your wall, brick by brick, until you were finally able to feel the love. Congratulations! I am very happy for you. You are very fortunate, and are a shining example for all of us to follow.

Love,

Dawn

Holistic Lifestyles Radio Show With Co Host Dawn Maslar-Ranish- The Broken Picker Fixer

On Friday December 18, 2009 we will be talking with Rachel Resnick. Resnick’s memoir, “Love Junkie: A Memoir of Love and Sex Addiction,” candidly chronicles her lifelong attraction to bad relationships and sex in order to fulfill the need for love. Resnick describes how a loveless childhood brought about her addiction to relationships with really bad men. That her mother’s mental instability caused her to marry a man who was incapable of love, and how this set Rachel up for destructive relationships. Such as the tattooed ex-con named Eddie, who was prone to vulgar verbal attacks and fits of terrifying physical rage.

Resnick will explain how her low self-esteem caused her to chase after dangerous, unavailable and cruel romantic partners. Also, how her addiction would lead her to engage in lewd, often risky acts. We will discuss what love addiction is and how it differs from a healthy relationship. You will learn what the three big red flags that might tell a person that he or she’s in love-junkie territory. Find out how having a broken picker or love at first sight might indicate that you need to take a look at your patterns. And, finally what help is available if you or someone you know needs it. Please join us as we discuss this very intimate and often very painful subject.
