HBAT vs. HBOT – What’s the Difference?

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Jun.08, 2011, under Home

When discussing hyperbaric protocols and treatment options with your prescribing physician it is important to know the dosage of oxygen, frequency and duration of the dive(s). Since hyperbaric treatment is commonly referred out to a specialized clinic or medical supplier, understanding this information could make the difference in the results you achieve.

HBAT is an abbreviation for Hyperbaric Air Therapy. Essentially, the chamber occupant breathes the same room air used to pressurize the hyperbaric chamber. No oxygen is used other than the oxygen contained in the normal air we breathe. Room air, is also referred to as Normoxic Nitrox. It contains 21% Oxygen, 78% Nitrogen with the 1% balance comprised of inert trace gases that naturally exist is our atmosphere. For the purposes of these dosage calculations this 1% is factored into the total Nitrogen percentage.

HBOT is an abbreviation for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. The chamber occupant breathes 100% gaseous oxygen or when oxygen concentrators are used, as a high of a percentage as the equipment is capable of delivering. The hyperbaric chamber may be completely pressurized with oxygen or the chamber is pressurized with Air (Normoxic Nitrox) and the oxygen is delivered to the patient through a B.I.B.S. (Built in Breathing System.) Types of BIBS include Non-Rebreather Masks, Demand Masks and Oxygen Hoods.

It is important to note that because of cost effectiveness, convenience and safety more hyperbaric chambers pressurize with Air and utilize a BIBS than pressurize with pure oxygen. US Navy Hyperbaric Protocol is exclusively pressurization with Normoxic Nitrox and Oxygen via BIBS.

The premise for utilizing just HBAT is that the increased pressure of the chamber elevates the partial pressure (percentage) of oxygen being provided to the tissues. It however overlooks that the partial pressure of nitrogen is significantly elevated as well. This is a result of Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressure. Simply stated, the sum of the whole is equal to all of the parts. In this case the “parts” are Nitrogen and Oxygen.

21% + 79% = 100%

Another way we could express this is:

.21 + .79 = 1.0

In the case of HBAT at a gauge pressure of 4 psi, which is approximately 1.3 ata:

.27 + 1.03 = 1.3

So yes, HBAT at 4 psig elevates the partial pressure of oxygen to from 21% (.21) to 27% (.27). It also elevates the partial pressure of nitrogen from 79% (.79) to 103% (1.03). Depending on what you are using HBAT for this may do more harm than good. The issue here is that while HBAT has been suggested in a small number of clinical trials to be marginally effective for a few conditions, there are other conditions where HBAT is known to be completely ineffective. There are also some conditions, such as infectious diseases and wound care where HBAT actually creates a negative, potentially harmful ischemic reaction. This is specifically related to the elevated partial pressure of nitrogen also being dissolved into the tissues, etc. An example of a condition where HBAT treatment could potentially cause harm is Lyme Disease. Not only does that low of a dosage of oxygen do nothing for the auto-immune system it pushes the bacillus further toward protecting itself with its protein coating camouflage.

During HBOT the patient is breathing a much higher partial pressure of oxygen. The actual dosage of oxygen delivered to the tissues, cerebral, synovial and lymphatic fluids is drastically higher but the partial pressure of nitrogen is nominal. Using the same example, HBOT using 100% oxygen at a gauge pressure of 4 psi delivers almost five time more. This may lead to the question that if some oxygen is good than is more better? Perhaps, but only to a point and dosage is specific to the exact condition being treated.

If your doctor prescribed HBOT but you were only going to get HBAT would you want to know? Of course you would and now you do…

How to calculate actual dosage is part of the ANDI Hyperbaric Course Curriculum. HyperbaricsRx offers a variety of seminars, courses and certification programs that greatly elaborate on the general concepts I’ve discussed here.

History Of Crossroads Centre, Of Antigua

A letter from our founder, Mr. Eric Clapton

For many years I have visited Antigua, the beautiful Caribbean island located in the heart of the West Indies. Antigua has always been a special refuge – a safe place, a serene place where one can begin the process of healing from even the most devastating events and life situations.

As a recovering addict and alcoholic, many people over the years spoke with me about the problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse on the island. Subsequently, around 1993, I began to speak with more and more people about the possibility of founding a Centre on the island for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. There was certainly a need, and so the dream and the vision were born.

My vision was to create a Centre of the highest caliber to treat people of the Caribbean and throughout the world. The Centre would be staffed with experienced and internationally recognized professionals. The cost of treatment would be held to the lowest possible level, ensuring affordability and accessibility. And most importantly, this non-profit Centre would provide treatment scholarships for people of the Caribbean region and around the world.

Well, this vision became a reality and Crossroads opened its doors to the world in 1998. Since then it has quickly developed into an internationally recognized Treatment Centre of Excellence, providing services to individuals and their families suffering from the devastating effects of addiction.

Crossroads is like no other Treatment Centre. It is the perfect place to begin the road of recovery and utilizes a combination of effective therapies to address addiction and recovery, while capturing the spiritual serenity that many have found unique to Antigua. Within the serene, healing atmosphere individuals participate in a structured 29-day residential 12 step based program that allows clients to experience a whole person wellness approach to recovery.

We believe that the majority of individuals suffering from addiction have the capacity for recovery if given the proper foundation to begin their journey. At Crossroads we help provide that foundation.

Sincerely,

Erics Signature

My First Time in a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on May.06, 2011, under Home

My First Time

For the past 6 months I have been suffering from severe hand, neck, and feet pain. I have been to the doctor and was prescribed a couple different medications but they were only temporary relief.

To my surprise once the Chamber was pressurized the room that you have in there is unbelievable. The sound from the machines working was not as loud as I thought it would be. I found in very relaxing. I did a 45 minute session and when I finally was out of the chamber I was calm and the pain was definitely less than before. I could not believe that I was worried to begin with.

I found that it being my first time in the Oxygen Chamber it would definitely benefit me with repeat treatment.

Traumatic Brain Injury, Addiction and Mild Hyperbaric Treatment

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Oct.19, 2010, under Home

The CDC estimated that 5.3 million Americans live with disabilities due to brain injury and that 67% of people in rehabilitation for brain injury have a previous history of substance abuse (Thurman, 1998). 50% of these people will return to using alcohol and drugs after the injury (Corrigan, 1995).120% of persons with brain injuries who did not use alcohol or drugs prior to the injury, were vulnerable to alcohol and drug use after the injury (Corrigan, 1995). 1 Each year in America, 1,000,000 people are seen by doctors due to a blow to the head. Of those people, 50,000 to 100,000 will have prolonged problems that will affect their ability to work and/or their daily lives. 1

Brain injury can impair attention, reasoning and perception; can cause an inability to analyze and synthesize information, impaired social judgment, reduced inhibition, and poor comprehension. (Ylvisaker and Szekeres in Chapey, 1994 retrieved from http://www.csuchico.edu)

1Kipnis, S., Foster, M., Killar, R, Lincourt, P., Sutter, C., and Oswald, S. “THE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AND CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY CONNECTION” retrieved from www.oasas.state.ny.us/admed/documents/TBIworkbook.ppt on 8/4/2010 TBI – Traumatic Brain Injury – is sudden physical damage to the brain from an external force that temporarily or permanently disrupts normal brain function. Brain characteristics and functions that can be affected include consciousness, speech and language, memory, mobility, personality and others.

TBI is commonly caused by Car Accidents and Sports-related Injuries. Personality and Behavioral Changes associated with TBI include reduced or diminished social skills, emotional control and mood swings, inappropriate behavior, reduced self-esteem, depression, anxiety, frustration, stress, reduced self awareness (often misunderstood as denial), self-centeredness, anger management and coping skill problems, decreased motivation and irritability or agitation.

TBI and addiction seem to go hand-in-hand according to the statistics. And there are Holistic solutions to TBI. mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) can support brain tissue repair and reduce the experience of symptoms during the healing process.

Not too long ago, doctors and scientists thought that once damaged, tissue in the brain could not heal. Recently doctors using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) have demonstrated that not only can brain tissue heal, even brain tissue with old injuries can be restored to functioning.

HBOT is a method of administering increased levels of oxygen at greater than atmospheric pressure to a patient in order to help heal tissue damage. HBOT appears to be effective at restoring cell function to tissue everywhere in the body — including the brain. By providing increased oxygen levels in a pressurized chamber we are able to deliver higher concentrations of oxygen than the brain normally receives through breathing. Some of the effects this has are to promote the growth of new blood vessels, to decrease swelling and inflammation, to deactivate and promote the release of toxins — and to promote overall healing. Advantages of HBOT include that it is cost-effective, noninvasive, and safe and works well with other treatments.

I came to G & G Holistic after multiple treatment episodes at other treatment centers. I had a history of methamphetamine abuse, hepatitis C and was diagnosed as a bi-polar. At intake I remember that I actually the therapist that this was probably my last chance. At that time, I was unemployed and unemployable, had no real friends and no place to live.

I was one of the first people to use the Hyperbaric therapy regularly. I have a standing appointment pretty much everyday. My ability to think and make decisions has improved beyond what I ever imagined. When I came to treatment, I was diagnosed as having bi-polar disorder as well. The use of the hyperbaric chamber and the nutraceuticals that I take as part of the hyperbaric therapy has helped to moderate my bi-polar. I still take medications for bi-polar. I probably always will. But now that I have been using the hyperbarics, I think they can actually work better.
I know that I am working better.

STEP THREE

STEP THREE « Holistic Lifestyles Radio

STEP THREE

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Aug.25, 2010, under Home

HOW DO WE TURN OUR WILL AND LIVES OVER TO THE “CARE” OF GOD?

“I was to sit quietly when in doubt, asking only for – direction and strength - to FACE and MEET my problems as He would have me do. Never – was I to pray for myself – except as my requests bore on my – usefulness to others. Then only might I expect to receive. But that would be – in great measure.” (A.A. Page 13)

THIRD STEP PRAYER

“God, I offer myself to thee, to make with me, and to do with me, what you will.”

Does this mean that we should – get out of the “driver’s seat”- and ask God become our – chauffeur?

Does this mean that God is a puppet master, and we should ask Him to make us one of His – puppets?

Does this mean we surrender our responsibility – for using the brains God gave us – to make decisions?

WHAT WAS BILL WILSON’S VIEW ON STEP THREE?

Human beings are supposed to – think and act. We weren’t made in God’s image to be – robots. My own formula along this line runs as follows:

First: I THINK through every situation – pro and con, praying meanwhile that I not be influenced by ego

considerations. I affirm – that I would like to do God’s will.

Second: Having tried to solve the problem by – using the brain God gave me to use - and getting no conclusive or

compelling answer, I WAIT for further guidance. This guidance may come from:

  1. An intuitive thought or idea
  2. Other people
  3. Circumstances

Third: If I feel I can’t wait, and still get no definite indication, I repeat the first measure – several times, and then

CHOOSE what I believe to be the best alternative. Then, I ACT. If I discover that I am moving in the wrong

direction, I make a U TURN, and try to – learn the lesson – from the experience. (As Bill Sees It – Page 55)

“We cannot wholly rely on friends to solve all our difficulties. A good sponsor or advisor will NEVER do all our thinking for us. They know that – each final choice – must be ours. What they can do is help us eliminate – fear, expediency, and self-deception. They can ‘enable’ us – to make choices – which are loving, wise, and honest.”

(As Bill Sees It – Page 83)

As a group, the original members of A.A. described themselves in this way:

“We were DRIVEN by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking and self pity.” (A.A. Page 62)

“Alcoholics are EXTREME examples of –self-will run riot – though they usually don’t think so.” (A.A. Page 62)

When we arrive at A.A. or N.A. we’re told that we have to get OUT of the “driver’s” seat. This is a MYTH because while active in our addiction we are – extreme – examples of self-will run riot; we’re DRIVEN by obsessive thoughts, compulsive feelings, and physical craving. We were NEVER “in” the driver’s seat.

I AM RESPONSIBLE means – I am willing to – get IN the driver’s seat.

I am willing to – accept RESPONSIBILITY for my life.

I then ask or pray for – guidance and direction – from God, my sponsor, or friends in recovery.

Then – I ACT.

Namaste, (The light in me “honors” the light in you.)

Every Monday & Thursday Night Our 10 PM EDT Show On Holistic Lifestyles Radio- We Want To Thank Our Sponsor Challenges Program For Their Support of the Relapse Prevention Hour with Terry Gorski.

Challenges’ program is specifically focused on relapse prevention. Challenges is the first facility in the country to receive special national certification as a Relapse Prevention “Center of Excellence” by the leading international expert in this field, Terence Gorski.

It is our belief, and the foundational component of our treatment program, that relapse prevention must provide and incorporate new strategies for the client, in the future, to be able to effectively deal with the entire potential multitude of symptoms, disorders, addictions and behaviors that in the past have combined to wreck havoc in the client’s life.

Introduction to Relapse Prevention We define Relapse Prevention as a strategy to train alcohol and other drug abusers to cope more effectively and to overcome the stressors or triggers in their environments related to alcoholism and drug addiction that may cause relapse to build into chemical dependency.

Drug addiction and alcoholism are diseases that, when left untreated or poorly treated, are typified by chronic relapse. The prevention of relapse is a critical part of any effective treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Understanding Relapse In order to understand the fundamentals behind Relapse Prevention , one must first understand relapse itself. In the medical community, a relapse is a regression after a period of partial recovery from an illness. In addiction treatment (or drug treatment) Relapse may easily be defined as returning to a specific behavior after a period of abstinence (stopping) from that particular behavior, that is, drug abuse. A relapse does not just happen by itself.

There are outside influences and contributing factors, and one can find evidence and warning signs that an individual might be in danger of returning to the destructive patterns of substance abuse. There is one accepted fact about relapse: Relapse does not come on suddenly and without warning, it is a process over time. Call 877-799-8773

Panitrol Natural Pain Reliever Try Your First Order Free Call 877-500-5529

Finally there is an all natural way to effectively relief pain of symptoms of arthritis, joint pain and muscle pain. Panitrol is a new joint and muscle pain relief breakthrough. The combination of all natural herbs in Panitrol helps block the transmission of pain signals.

They work synergistically to reduce swelling of joints, inflammation and effectively block chronic pain receptors in the brain without disrupting the pain signals that warn you that a new injury has occurred.

Panitrol is an effective all natural joint and muscle pain relief alternative to dangerous, prescription pain killers.

A message from a Panitrol user:

I have been active in sports and fitness my entire life, and still at age 53 I was jogging, working out and playing competitive racquetball 2 to 3 hours a night several nights a week.

This all came to a halt seven years ago when an auto accident left me with 7 herniated discs… four in my neck and three in my lower back with a tear in the center of one of them.

I had $93,000 of medical bills with top neurosurgeons, pain specialists, physical therapy, epidurals, etc. After all of that… I couldn’t even walk or stand without excruciating pain shooting through my buttocks and down my legs.

There were times I had to crawl to the bathroom. Pain in my shoulders and hands sometimes kept me from falling asleep until the sun came up. The pain was 24/7. This affected my work and every part of my life. For more than 15 years I’ve loved playing guitar with my son… it broke my heart when I had to tell him “I’m sorry I can’t play because I have too much pain in my hands”. I couldn’t wash dishes or use the vacuum. It hurt to bend over and tie my shoes. It was painful to raise my arms over my head. As a result of inactivity I also gained over 50 lbs.

When I first heard about Panitrol I was skeptical but, I felt I had nothing to lose by trying it. On my fifth day I was walking without pain. Within a few weeks I was able to jog and play golf without pain and even get back on the racquetball court. Pain and stiffness are also gone in my neck and shoulders. I’m also losing weight because I’m active again.

Now I’m Pain Free and Panitrol has given me a new lease on life! I’m telling everyone I know about Panitrol. I figure about a million people need this product.

Mike Kovach

Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) Task Force is a nonprofit that goes into schools and colleges to educate students and parents.

By Rachel Gomez
Not enough action is being taken at the state and federal levels to combat the growing illegal distribution of illicit drugs and powerful prescription pills. Close to 24,000 people die of drug overdoses every year in the U.S., according to federal statistics.

Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) Task Force is a nonprofit that goes into schools and colleges to educate students and their parents about the dangerous consequences of using and mixing legal and illegal drugs. The agency brings its message to both public and private forums to focus attention on an epidemic that is killing children and adults alike. NOPE Task Force also aims to get youths addicted to drugs into treatment programs.

During this time of year, the holiday season can be hard for parents who have lost children to drugs. NOPE Task Force has a support group for them in West Palm Beach, Fla. so they can openly discuss their problems, process their feelings, and hear others talk about their situations.

NOPE Task Force believes that whether you’re a young person dealing with substance abuse or a grieving parent, you’re not alone. To find out more about NOPE Task Force, visit www.nopetaskforce.org.
