Friends, family, and her legions of admirers (and her admirers include every musician and singer who ever worked with her) will say goodbye to Phoebe Snow, sweet diva, voice from God, today in New York City. We lost Phoebe to the ages earlier this week after she lost her own battle with a long illness.

Phoebe Snow was no stranger to the idea of recovery, and survival. Even a quick Google search will yield the the well-known information that she put her legendary career on hold to care for her disabled daughter, Valerie, who predeceased her by only a few years. After Valerie’s passing, Phoebe worked to recover from grief and triumphed,
taking to concert stages (a particularly storied return to the Bearsville Theatre had the audience alternately screaming her name and disolving in tears) and the recording studio. Hers was a unique talent, and she could be the most generous and giving of friends, as I know well. When my husband died of cancer in 2005, she came to sing at his memorial concert and then, several months later, contacted me to say that she had arranged a Buddhist toba prayer ceremony for him at her midtown NYC temple, and would I attend with her? It was such a lovely gesture, from such a brave and celestially talented soul. We all miss her dearly, and always will.
